Cherie Calbom on the Anticancer Power of Vegetable Juicing

In short, Cherie notes in the interview that vegetable juices are rich in just about everything we need to fight cancer.

From various phytochemicals, vitamins, minerals, enzymes and biophotons, if you want to flood the body with healing so to speak vegetable juice is an easy and effective way to do it.

Although science is now starting to catch up with loads of studies released on the anticancer power of the different phytochemicals found in vegetables, they’ve been known for their healing power since the beginning of medicine.

Cherie says in the interview that “the father of modern medicine” Hippocrates a Greek physician in 400 B.C. built his clinic by a stream abundant in watercress so that he could easily gather it to give to his patients.

2500 years later searching watercress in combination with cancer on PubMed or and internet search yields dozens of studies on exactly how the compounds found within the watercress plant fight cancer at a cellular level.

In another example, one could consider beta carotene to be one of the “active ingredients” found within carrot juice.

In our own personal research for our son we’ve found numerous studies on beta carotene’s anticancer effect on neuroblastoma cells. It’s even been shown to target neuroblastoma stem cells.

Cancer stem cells are those that are responsible for producing more cancer cells and metastasizing. Since they replicate slowly chemotherapy and radiation have a hard time killing them as these therapies target rapidly dividing cells.

From kale to celery to cucumbers, studies abound on the plant chemicals inside of them causing everything from cancer cell apoptosis (cell death) to inhibition on angiogenesis (tumors’ ability to form new blood supply to feed itself).

Cherie notes an anticancer favorite of hers – turmeric / lemon / ginger “shots!”

Cherie Calbom Recommends Avoiding Fruit Juice

Cherie made the note that the type of juicing she recommends for cancer is vegetable juicing. She leaves out most fruits, likely due to the fructose content.

Natural fruit sugars are of course the topic of much debate in the holistic cancer community. There are those that say never or very sparingly consume them, others that say they are fine in their “whole food” form (ie. Eating a whole apple).

Still others that say fruit sugar is fair game in any form and not the same and the concern for sugar disproportionally feeding cancer cells only exists in processed, unnatural forms such as high fructose corn syrup, etc.

We’ll leave the diving too deep into the debate for another time, but past interviews with strong proponents of fruit sugars include Dr. Patrick Vickers, Dr. Robert Morse, and Terry Tillaart. Past interviews with those encouraging considerable limitation of fruit sugars include Dr. Thomas Seyfried, Dr. Nasha Winters, and Travis Christofferson.

Cherie does not, however, exclude carrots from her recommendations even though they do contain higher amounts of fruit sugar due to their long track record of being so instrumental in thousands of healing journeys and given the science mentioned above.

She is also a proponent of including lemon and lime into juices as they are very low glycemic and high alkaline forming fruits.

For these sorts of things Calbom says a safe bet to get the best of both worlds is to “dilute” them with greens or perhaps a cucumber.

More Life-Giving Properties of Vegetable Juice

For anyone going through cancer or wanting to prevent it from ever touching their family, a few more terms of note Cherie Calbom went over pertaining to vegetable juice:

Biophotons

Light rays of energy absorbed by plants. Kirlian photography shows beautiful colors around raw plants (and concentrated in juice from them) but they’re almost all gone in cooked.

Biophotons literally feed cells’ mitochondria and help them communicate with one another.

Two universal hallmarks of cancer cells are damaged mitochondria and lost ability to communicate with other cells… so this is a really big deal both in reversing and preventing cancer.

Detoxification

According to Cherie there’s essentially two parts to healing: feed deficiencies and remove toxins… sounds about right to us.

The body will store toxins in fat cells if it does not believe they can make it through the body without causing damage along the way. The antioxidants the body receives from juice are what it needs to use to assist in binding up toxins, carrying them safely out of the body.

Oxygenation

In short – oxygen equals bad news for cancer cells’ ability to take hold.

Vegetable juice is loaded with the nutrients that assist in transporting oxygen where it needs to go in the body and even in and out of cells.

This makes it the perfect compliment to deep breathing exercises and oxygen based therapies such as hyperbaric or ozone treatments.

Do I Have to Make Fresh Juice Every Time?

According to Cherie Calbom, while it is “best” in terms of antioxidant and nutrient value… not if it comes at the expense of doing it at all.

When Cherie was sick in her own healing journey (which is incredible… be sure to download the audio above or watch the video below) she only had energy in the mid-afternoon. She’d make a big batch then and drink it for the rest of that day and start of the next.

Light, heat and oxygen are the three things that will start to degrade the juice so filling up a jar all the way to the top with a tight lid and putting it in the fridge is going to be the best way to preserve it.

Cherie also works with a lot of people with a lot of people who will make a HUGE batch once a week and freeze what they aren’t going to use right away in jars big enough for one days’ worth of juice (a favorite strategy of ours!).

Also, especially if you’re on a healing journey and have people asking what they can do to help… it’s this…

Have a friend or family member come over when you’re making your big batch to assist with washing, peeling, juicing, etc.

Also for us when people asked what they could bring, the answer was often a list of produce!

What’s the Best Type of Juicer?

In Cherie Calbom’s words, the best juicer for you is the one you actually use.

So while it’s easy to get lost in the research when getting a new one, what’s more important is the commitment to follow through with using it once you get it.

Setup and cleanup time plays a role here. While masticating or press style juicers preserve more nutrients than the centrifugal design, they also tend to take a little more time to use.

So Cherie personally tends to use a centrifugal and add in extra ingredients for any nutrients she may be using.

Us being us, we right away got the granddaddy of all press juicers, the Norwalk.

While we love it and use it all the time, it is expensive to get in the first place and cleanup is indeed somewhat time consuming.

The other juicer that we love and use all the time is the Tribest Greenstar Elite.

While this is also a masticating style juicer, it’s faster to clean up than the Norwalk and ironically being so much less expensive also does a much better job with greens.

Juicing and Ketosis

Cherie shares a very deeply held concern we have for those attempting to implement a ketogenic diet.

While the research is promising, if it comes at the cost of removing all the life-giving nutrients and properties mentioned above it’s not a true healing strategy.

In her course, Cherie walks people through how to implement juicing into a ketogenic approach for those wishing to go that route.

Making Juice Work with Kids

Side note to the interview from us at The Stern Method.

The main thing we do with our kids, and counsel every parent we work one on one with to do with theirs, is to just keep on presenting new options.

No two juices taste the same. Just because your kid didn’t like the last one doesn’t mean they won’t like this one.

Find a way to negotiate with them to at least try every juice you make. If you need to start off even heavily sweetening them with something like a stevia product it’s totally OK and will get them in the habit of drinking juice and you can adjust as you go from there.

As with all of the healthy habits we implement with our kids, we know that it’s crucial that they see us doing it if we want them to do it. This means all the time, not just something you do here and there.

Building a culture of health in your home that includes the whole family is the only way truly get your kids on board with juicing and all healthy habits.

Most importantly, as we say at the end of every podcast interview… Just keep going. It may take a lot of patience but if you stay vigilant and keep presenting them with new options, they will come around.

This was another episode that has been a long time coming on this show that I was really glad to get on the books. Juicing was a huge part of our cancer journey with Ryder as it has been for thousands of people successfully taking a natural or integrative approach but I feel like with all the new research out on ketosis and more and more focus on treatments in clinics the last couple years it’s sort of taken a back seat in the health world’s attention so I was very happy to do this show to remind all of us what a no brainer juicing is in flooding the body with vital nutrients which really could make all the difference in the world.
